Partners And Communities Together

I would normall put Tony Wiles's wise words elsewhere on the site, but as this is his final article, I felt it deserved pride of place:

It seems like only yesterday that I joined the Metropolitan police at the tender age of 19. I can't remember what I did yesterday but I can vividly recall those early days as I stumbled through dealing with my first crime report, car crash and arrest. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, almost 30 years worth and my time in the police is rapidly drawing to a close. My last working day at the moment looks like being 28th October so this is likely to be my final article for the PACT website.

It was a good move leaving London and transferring to the Kent Police in 1986 and by the time I leave I will have spent over half my service, 16 years as one of your local community officers. This time as your local officer has been the most fulfilling and enjoyable and it has been great getting to know so many of you over the years. It has not always been easy and I have not always succeeded but hopefully in some small way I will have helped in resolving local issues and concerns or at least been that cheeky cheerful bloke you could vent your frustrations on.

Thank you for the friendship so many of you have shown towards me, to the point of almost being part of the family. To have shared both sad and happy times with you. For all the help and the copious amounts of tea coffee and cake and the odd Sunday roast, how will I survive without homemade shortbread and flapjacks. Being part of your community, sharing in local events and functions and seeing first hand all the hard work which goes on has been a privilege.

Thank you, goodbye and all the best.

The Borough Green, Wrotham and Platt  PACT  panel comprises local people and organisations working together to improve the quality of our lives.

Established in 2007, PACT arose from an idea of local residents Lottie Cook and Jonathan Broad which coincided with other developments.

There was a strong realisation that community problems are rarely solved by a single agency alone but by the active co-operation of a number of organisations coming together to focus their combined effort.

Our PACT Panel members come from residents, the three Parish Councils, Kent Police, Russet Homes and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council.

Depending on the problem, we also call for help upon others with specific expertise  -  for example education, youth workers, Environment Warden to help with dog fouling and litter etc., the Highways Inspector, Parking Inspector and volunteers like Neighbourhood Watch and Residents Associations.

Going Walkabout

Early activities have included a "walk-about" in each Parish when residents had a chance to identify issues which adversely affect their lives. These were followed up with meetings where action was decided upon. Issues identified across TN15 included crime, health, education and learning, levels of work, housing and the physical environment, street lighting, noise, dog fouling, parking, bus and postal services.

Some were big, others small, but nonetheless unnecessary irritants.

Through PACT we can influence and shape services in our area, identify our priorities with partners and help create a community spirit and ownership for TN15.

PACT TN15 is not a talking shop. We are here to act.

If you want to get involved or have a community problem we will do our best to find a solution. Contact us by going to the MESSAGE BOARD> page, or email partners@pact-tn15.org
